The Newbies travelled to Morecambe to play the Heysham Atoms in both teams first competitive Rugby League Match.
It was agreed to play 7 a side with the Wildcats taking an impressive 10 enthusiastic players to the game which despite the very damp forecast was played in pleasant conditions. The pitch was expected to be a tad soggy but was surprisingly firm underfoot. The Wildcats had trained in an absolute deluge on Thursday night in preparation for this game which again gives some idea into the enthusiasm these under 7s have for the game.
Heysham got off to a good start with an early try from one of the many speedy, nimble players in the side. It took the Wildcats a while to get into their stride but when they did some strong running got them over the line, the scores after the first quarter standing at 16-8.
More of the same in the 2nd quarter and the scores at half time standing at 24-12 although Wildcats were more comfortable with the ball in hand and some strong driving runs didn’t get the rewards they deserved.
As the game moved into the 2nd half Atoms scored an early try with a try from the speedy winger down the right hand side of the pitch, touching down nicely in the corner.
Wildcats replied with a couple of similar tries of their own and the game became a lot closer moving into the end of the 3rd quarter and with an exchange of well worked tries in the final quarter of the game the match concluded with the scores at 44-36 in favour of the Heysham Atoms who in fairness deserved the win in a game played with amazing spirit from both sides which is of course what we all wanted to see.
Some promising performances today from all the team which will only get better and stronger the more games they play together.
Particular thanks to Pete for arranging the day and thanks to the Atoms for hosting our kids and feeding them as well !
